Engagement Rings and Diamonds in the News - Schiphol Airport Truck Hijack, AmsterdamIn February of 2005, thieves hijacked a truck at Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. Now this was no ordinary truck, this truck was full of rough diamonds with an estimated value of $118 million! The figure of $118 million is an estimate as it is difficult to put a cost to uncut diamonds. However assuming that this figure is true, this is the biggest recorded diamond heist ever! Well, calling it a heist is a bit of an overstatement - this was more like a smash and grab.

Engagement Rings and Diamonds in the News - Schiphol Airport Truck Hijack, Amsterdam - What Happened? The thieves targeted a diamond-bearing truck which was due for a flight to Antwerp on a KLM aircraft (no doubt due to create numerous engagement rings in Antwerp too!). The gang of thieves stole two KLM trucks and KLM uniforms in order to enter the freight area of the Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam. Quite simply, the thieves drove up beside the diamond-bearing truck, threatened the nearby staff with guns, jumped in and drove away. Now I don't know about you but that just sounds too easy doesn’t it? The companies that lost millions worth of diamonds in the raid blame the lack of airport security. Who in their right mind would have such low security on a truck worth $188 million?! For obvious reasons the authorities believed this heist to be an inside job. However, following investigations no leads surfaced and none of the rough diamonds have ever been recovered. You can make a fair few engagement rings from $118 million worth of rough diamonds I am willing to bet! |
