Princess Cut Engagement Rings - What's in a Name?

One version of the origins of the Princess Cut name is that the Princess Cut diamond wasn't so much invented as it was developed over time and continually refined until it was patented in 1971;

The first square cut diamond resembling what we now call Princess Cut was mastered by a London diamond cutter in 1961 by the name of Aprad Nagy. Since this original cut was much flatter than the current Princess Cut the honour of laying claim to the design has been attributed to basil Watermeyer who patented his version of the cut in 1971. He called it "Barion cut" and protected it by a multitude of patents.

Due to the patents the sale of the diamond shape was restricted for a long time, however in the last 10 years many of these patents have expired. Now the square diamond cut resembling the barion shape has been renamed " Princess Cut". And as you know, they have they have taken the market by storm. Other names the shape is known by includes Squadrillion, Quadrillion and Profile cut.
