The public loves hearing when a Hollywood star gets engaged, even though many of these engagements fall through within weeks. But when two major Hollywood stars hook up, the media go into frenzy discussing everything from engagement rings to wedding plans. Nothing was different in 2005 when two of the biggest names, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes agreed to tie the knot. No two people had created such buzz and controversy over their so far whirlwind romance as these two. Tom proposed in probably one of the most romantic settings in the world - the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Art Deco Engagement Rings

When the couple left the Eiffel Tower, people couldn't help noticing the huge new ring on Katie's all-important finger. The 5ct oval-shaped diamond was set in platinum and rose gold in simple symmetry, making it look reminiscent of art deco engagement rings. The unusual platinum-rose gold setting spices up and personalises what would otherwise be an antique-style. The split shank, where the band splits as it travels towards the centre, provides stability to solitaire engagement rings and supports the main stone.

New celebrity engagement rings always attract both admiration and criticism and Tom and Katie's was not spared. A lot of critics loved the rings size, beauty and uniqueness. But others thought that the ring was too big for Katies narrow fingers and frame. It was also noticed that the ring kept sliding around her finger, and when diamond engagement rings do this, it means it is either too big or too heavy. Some critics also disliked the platinum engagement rings design, saying that the diamond is set too high and likely to catch on clothing and possibly get in the way during certain activities.

It seems that the engagement ring wasn't particularly suited to Katie, and there are other engagement rings that would better complement her slender fingers and suit her lifestyle, such as the diamond engagement rings by 1791 Diamonds below. It can also be difficult pairing engagement rings like hers with suitable wedding rings because of the awkward size.

Engagement Rings Aside

Unfortunately the engagement ring is not the only thing Katie was criticised for. She received a lot of criticism for her choice of wedding gowns, an Armani gown that is suspected to have cost $100,000 plus! Some people thought it looked a bit old fashioned. Maybe she was aiming for traditional. The ceremony location seemed pretty special though, taking place at the Odescalchi Castle in Lake Braceiano, Italy. After the ceremony, Katie changed out of her wedding dress to party, wearing a beautiful Armani evening gown. Their wedding cake was five tiers made of white chocolate and decorated with marzipan roses and studded with white chocolate chips. Yum!
