The Famous Bulgari 'Blue' Diamond RingThe 1970s-era is not known for the excesses of other decades, but for jewelry, and diamond Engagement Rings it has certainly produced more than its fair share of world class pieces. But most would literally pale in comparison to one which was produced in 1972, the renowned Bulgari 'Blue' which still holds the record for the highest amount for a diamond ring sold in auction - a staggering US$15.7 million! Featuring a triangular-shaped, colorless diamond of 9.87 carats paired with a stunning triangular-shaped fancy vivid blue diamond of 10.95 carats - it is reputed to be the largest fancy vivid blue diamond of this cut ever to be offered at auction. It had been held in a private collection by its original owner who had the diamond ring made by the iconic Italian jewelers for his wife to celebrate the birth of their first son. Bulgari had a reputation then among Europe's most fashionable and discerning clients for their pieces. Among the 'it' woman who shared a love for the jeweler and no doubt expected their various diamond engagement rings to come from there were Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren and of course, Elizabeth Taylor. Taylor's third husband, Eddie Fisher - who once said that a $50,000 diamond would keep her happy for about four days- also commented that: 'The only word Elizabeth knows in Italian is Bulgari.' |
